It’s a key component of neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets, which are the most powerful permanent magnets available. Discovered by Austrian chemist Carl Auer von Welsbach in 1885, neodymium is extracted mainly from bastnäsite and monazite ores. The metal itself is silvery-white and tarnishes when exposed to air, forming an oxide layer. It’s relatively abundant, making up about 38 parts per million of the Earth’s crust, similar to copper.
